Got up 2.5 hrs early today (6:00) to do the state inspection thing. Dealer appointment for 7:30, arrived 7:15 with the Jeep, brought me in at 7:20. No prob, went home got the M6, failed, not ready. (I disconnected the battery to hard wire the float charger the day before, my fault, I’m old.) Dealer said drive it 50mi and let it cool down. I drove into ME, they have a 70 limit so I did 78 for 40 mi, 72 for the rest, took it home and got the RE. RE passed no prob (no pass or rear seat and Sunoco 100) then took it home and brought the M6 back, now maybe 70mi plus a cool down, STILL NOT READY!!!! Get home 1pm. WTF!!!

The AHOLES in gvt want to save the environment by making me waste 6 hours and still not accomplish the inspections!!! The oldest car is the M6 with the highest mileage 17k. The others are under 7kmi and less than 3y old!!! WHY DO ANY OF THESE NEED AN INSPECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a law!!!!: No inspections required on any passenger car with mileage under 30k and less than 5y old!!! This would help owners and shops. From what I understand inspections are coerced by the state as a condition of getting a dealer’s license. They always say they lose money on $40 inspections when they can charge $200/hr on regular service.

I might say: Maybe we shouldn’t elect stupid people into office. Unfortunately, only stupid people (with delusions of grandeur) run for state office.

Agreed, NY is a shit show as well. I dread it. For my Roadrunner the guy just looks it over and puts on the sticker. My M6 goes on the machine, so anything is possible.

The Government at its finest...I think my Hellcat inspection is out 2 years now, and my registration just expired last week. Can't renew the registration without an inspection.

I have a buddy that works at a shop part time that will just let me bring it in and run the OBDP thing myself, but he isn't around on the weekends. The owner of the shop always complains to me that they lose time and money by doing inspections. Plus, they get nothing additional from me...no one else is going to touch my cars for repairs/maintenance except me.

At best, it should be a safety check to make sure your car has lights, brakes and tires.

Meanwhile, they should be checking the fitness of the drivers here in NY, never mind the cars.

I agree. Older cars should have to pass safety requirements. No inspection at all in Florida. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

Utah got rid of safety inspections a few years back. Someone actually ran the numbers and found out that it never actually increased public safety at all--but instead cost the state money to manage all the certifications and bureaucracy around it.

Still waiting for them to get rid of emissions testing in the major counties as well. (Rural counties here don't have that either--I know guys driving around catless w/o a care.)

Took a car to inspection one time and the really really overweight person actually broke my carseat. He sat down and it went all the way back till the back seat stopped it. The inspection is privately owned by parsons. They denied any responsibility and failed my car for safety equipment.

They can deny responsibility all day long...that doesn't absolve them of liability...that's what small claims courts are for...and even though not required...an attorney is advised...

Many years ago, before I moved to Florida, Ohio had emissions testing. Ohio built emissions testing facilities and contracted minimum wage employees. Needless to say, most cars failed and the employees were so inept, they got the makes of cars mixed-up. There was such an uproar over the emissions testing, the State finally closed it down. I had a low mileage Lincoln and it failed. Once your vehicle was two years old, you had to have an emissions testing certificate or no plates. Never would be too soon for emissions testing...

WOW! You must be really rally old! I got my license in Ohio in 1985 and never remember any emissions testing in Ohio. Plus my dad had a shop at our house from the time I could walk, and I do not remember anyone coming in talking about it either.
We don't currently have emissions or safety inspections here (NW Ohio)
The most we have to do is dealer inspection if you buy an out of state vehicle to get plates, and that just basically verifies VIN and everything is attached to the vehicle. Plus, tags are set prices and not based on vehicle value like some states.

There were inspections in FL when I 1st moved here & they were a total joke ! Cars more than 1 yr old had to go thru the inspection process, but they excluded cars >25 years as 'classics'. While that is true for some, there were more being driven around that were smoking 'classic' piles of shit.

Then there was the $ restrictions on required repairs for cars that failed. Once you spent $150 trying to make it compliant, you were off the hook even if it still failed. Shops, of course, took advantage and would basically do little or nothing, collect the $150 & 'pass' the car.

I was happy to see it nix'ed.

Agree on checking drivers. Make sure their hands, feet and eyes work at least. Had 3 people almost crash into the M6 going back and forth to the dealer that day. No one bothered the Jeep or RE. Is there something about the color white? Red was said to be the color that infuriated other drivers. Maybe white is the new red.

In IL, I passed emissions catless in my '85 Vette. It easily passed high rpm but failed at idle. I cranked the screw to raise the idle to 1k and sailed right through! What a joke.

In the last 15y, the only thing I paid the dealer for was at last year's inspection on the '04 Wrangler they replaced a 3rd brake light without asking for $36! (2 screws to access and a 25c bulb which they charged $6 for.) They didn't check with me, they just did it. When I got home, it still didn't work. A critter chewed through the wire, I traced it and fixed it myself. I am no master mechanic, but it sure seems like I do better work than the dealer. It may take me longer, but I know exactly what has been done.

The other thing is, the mechanic will fix what is broke. When I do my repair, I replace everything accessible during the repair. My '03 Silverado needed a front bearing hub. Bought 2 new SKF hubs and 2 complete premium front axle assys from Rockauto. Everything like new for cheap!

Since the Serv Mgr and his assistant got me in and out quickly, and the tech is top notch, I brought them each a 12 pack of Harpoon. It's not their fault the cars get f'kd up and the owner is a greedy rich prick.
