Just like the oil issue...we tend to over think things

More "expensive" gas tends to have more additives, while additives might be good for long term reliability, they might not be good for immediate performance...

Back in the day......

There were many local independent gas stations with lower prices than the majors. My father had a Texaco and a Sunoco station, we lived not far from New Haven CT where gas was offloaded from tankers. If you want to believe him, here is his story.

Beware of stations that are not associated with a refinery. If there is no refinery, they must purchase gas from a source affiliated with a refinery. He claimed that sometimes gas would be auctioned off in lots, either surplus, or from a bankruptcy, or whatever. But more likely it was gas compromised in some way, such as by seawater. So the risk was you might be getting Shell or Sunoco on the cheap, until you hit the bottom of the lot.

These days we don't see much of this, not sure exactly why. I'd like to think technology minimizes contamination and can filter out what is contaminated. I'd like to believe...

Minimum required octane is always better than too much.

This is what exhaust valves look like after ONE tank of leaded Sunoco race fuel from the pump:

I only run Sunoco 94 octane. They are top tier and IF I had to buy gas somewhere else, I Would only go to a top tier gas station.
Exxon is a good station to go to IF you don't have Sunoco. Sunoco has ran my Scat pack and now my SRT Durango.

I am with you guys. A non-top tier but major respected brand here in MN just replaced all their tanks, sells a variety of fuels. It is also “down the street”. I like the new 93 octane pump/tank and it is priced in the mid-upper $3.xx right now.

When we race them….Run a high quality fuel (92-93 octane-pump) along with the high octane fuel to make more average octane. Right? We know VP Fuels are some of the best. Now go blast your car through a few races once in a while and spit shine any and all deposits you may have accumulated going to the store and loving on it in town.
