Rear Brake Question

Hi,

Take a look at this pic of my rear rotor, this one is drivers side but the passenger is the same. Why is the braking surface not fully utilized, is this normal or is there something weird going on here? This is a Scat Pack Challenger, with the Dynamics Package. The Front rotors have the pad using the full surface.....

Pull those pads. Is there a large chunk of them missing? Or is the surface not flat in some way?

How about a picture of the rotor with a good straight edge layed down on it.

Just an aside, this is a brand new car, ordered in October last year, and received the week of Thanksgiving 2019. I took that picture with about 430 miles on the car, I Have almost 1200 on it now that it has been out of storage and that still looks like that. I guess maybe I should inspect the pads....

I guess an assumption is that you've put more than Grandma pressure on the brakes since you bought it, right?

I'm not talking aggressive, just "normal" braking pressure during those break-in miles.

Just checked my 2019 RE with 733mi. Looks exactly the same.

Seriously, I'd really like at least one of you to pull those pads and look at them.

One other thought given the consistency of this is that maybe there's a break-in area on the pad that hasn't been worn through yet. But I'd still expect it to be the full width of the pad.

Went out to put the new registration sticker I just got on the windshield and while I was out there I snapped pic with flashlight on rotor. No heat in garage and its 48 and raining. Not wanting to sit on concrete floor . Same weather tomorrow. Maybe next weekend. Lol. Sorry.

I will say a few years ago I replaced the pads on my BMW and when I took the old off they were flat and thin and the new ones were very thick but had a huge @45 degree cut at the top that went at least a 3rd into the pad with what I thought was an odd waist of pad to get to full width at a much later date. Maybe your right about break in area,

I'm finishing off the extended wheel stud project on Monday (weather permitting) so the back calipers will be off then and I can snap a pic or two.

Anyone have the spec sheets for the brake assembly handy? I don't doubt that its "factory" with three or more cars showing it, but it is just odd to me. I'm sure it's a cost saving measure ("see, we'll buy all the same rotors and utilize only a limited area on them because of x, y, and z"). I mean, at the very least it would seem there is either some performance left on the table or some unnecessary weight, small as it is, that could be lost.

I agree, Weird. massive waist of braking performance. My Cat use's the full surface. I will say it is due to a stupid brake pad vender. that miss tooled the chamfer on the edge of the pad. no reason at all for this. Is the back side of the rotor the same pattern?

I don't have a punch to knock the pins out just yet....might have to wait out the quarantine stuff to do this but I bet the pads have a beveled edge....

I'm certainly used to seeing a bevel on the leading/trailing edge, but a square edge on the I.D./O.D. If there was a bevel there at all, I'd expect it to be "small", not that large...

Well....maybe they stuck the wrong pads in my rear brakes....maybe i got the non-dynamics pads? Or maybe they changed the pads? Weird....I wonder if I should call the dealership and see if this is a potential warranty claim then....
