Knew folks in NYC that did the same and finally left a blanket in the car for a homeless guy who would sleep there, he basically guarded the car for them. While I understand, that whole situation is jacked up.
I lived in Manhattan back in the mid-eighties. Drove a ‘75 Plymouth Duster. I never locked it. Ever. The only thing I did was chain and lock the hood down so no one could steal my battery.

What does it do if you pull it out while driving?
I would not recommend it while driving.....but if in park, it kills the motor completely since it is an immobilizer

Risk to transmission and driveline if done while moving I would suspect

Asking to see if it killed the motor or just the starter. The starter solenoid could have been jumped through there, instead of whatever they did with this contraption, to stop it from starting but not pose the risk of damage during a drive. Only an idiot would do it, but we are surrounded by those.

For some of us insurance will never refund the money we have into mods.
Also if the car is found and someone was joy riding in my car isn't ideal. At the end of the day it is a pretty crappy situation.
Consider agreed value insurance. That's what I have on mine from Haggerty.

Ya I’m to young for haggerty. They quoted me over 3k for the year. I think it was 3500 bucks.
im hoping next year I can do something like that when I’m a year older.

Good thing I paid cash for the busa they wanted 1500 a year for full on that. With the most basic insurance I still pay 500
And that was the cheapest I could find.

If they want to flat bed it, be my guest. As somebody pointed out already, if they really want to steal it, they will.

The trend I’m seeing is the dumb asses duplicating key fobs through the OBD port and driving off.

Its definately a good idea just dont lose the fob or ur screwed. And be careful with them pins. Dont bend em. I would get a GPS tracking system as well (Just a spare line on ur cell phone account and hard wire the phone with power simple really). I just used an old Iphone I was no longer using.

I have both GPS, kill switch and Lojack. I will be searching for my vehicle if it ever gets stolen first before I report it stolen cause if and when u get it back its now a stolen recovered vehicle on Carfax and the value now goes in the Toilet! Even if the Police find it 20 minutes later its still a stolen recovery if u reported it stolen.

I had a Mercedes stolen years ago equipped with both Lojack and GPS and just located it on my phone an hour later in some mopes backyard in the ghetto. I had spare key. Lojack isnt activated till the VIN# is entered into NCIC. Just some FYI...... I worked in Auto Theft for most of my Career but now retired.

I remember when I 1st bought the Charger in 2018, we would take trips and park it at hotels all over the place. I remember leaving it in a parking garage in Charlotte for 3 days.
Now everyone is afraid to leave theirs somewhere.
WTF happened??

The thief with a tow truck is what worries me most, no way to stop that.
If you back into a parking spot and put on the parking brake - and leave it in Park if an A8 - the will have to enter the car to release the brake and get into the console to bypass Park. And, for me (because I forgot once and tapped one), I won't be able to scrape those concrete stops. If deterrence is the name of the game maybe a cruising tow truck will move on to another car they can back their truck up to, lift up the rear end, and drive away.

Has anyone had their dealership do whatever they do that precludes us having a new key fob made if we lose one? I got a letter a few months ago about it - it is a free service trying to reduce thefts. Getting new fobs can be done, but it requires replacement of a $200 part (plus labor, tax) and all new key fobs. Probably add up to $500-600. I'm probably going to do this to defeat their starting the car. As discussed, there are other ways for them to steal our cars.

Anyone have a details on how it went at their dealership?

If I were driving the tow truck, I'd just winch it up on the bed with the tires not turning. No big deal.
